Do You See the Glass Half Full or Half Empty?

Are you an optimist or a pessimist?

Seeing the glass half full means having an optimistic attitude. The definition of an optimist is “someone who is generally hopeful or who tends to expect the best possible outcome.” But are optimists naive, ingenuous, or even dreamers? Life is full of good and bad moments, challenges, difficulties, and decisions, and optimists accept these situations but tend to approach them with a positive attitude. They look for the light at the end of the tunnel during tough times.

On the other hand, seeing the glass half empty means having a pessimistic attitude. A pessimist typically assumes the worst and focuses mainly on the negative aspects of a situation. Living this way can cause you to miss opportunities in life, neglect problems that need solving, and make it harder to improve your quality of life. Pessimism breeds indecision and frustration. In fact, studies show that pessimism can affect your health and increase your susceptibility to serious illnesses. If you’ve always had a pessimistic view of life, it may be hard to shift your focus, but it’s possible. Below are some tips to start thinking more optimistically:

Remember that life is short

Time spent being negative leaves you with less time to enjoy what life has to offer. Time is limited.

Take action

You can make changes to improve your life if you really want to. Stop thinking the world is against you or that you have bad luck.

Smile

Did you know that smiling triggers brain activity and makes you feel happier? The more you smile and laugh every day, the better you will feel.

Use positive affirmations

You can write notes to yourself in a notebook or somewhere in your home to remind yourself of messages like “Anything is possible,” “I am the master of my own life,” “My circumstances don’t define me; I define them,” “I can learn and improve, even if I make mistakes,” etc.

Focus on the Now

Try to worry less about the past and the future; today is a gift. The more energy you invest in the present, the more you will enjoy your life.

Breathe

When you’re feeling stressed, take deep breaths, and you’ll feel your body relax, and your mind will become more positive.

Exercise

Physical exercise is another way to release tension and negative thoughts and makes you feel more in control of your life.

Enjoy the small things in life

A good cup of coffee, spending time with friends, playing with a small child… Remember all the positive things in your life and how lucky you are to be alive.
